Boston University, or BU for short, is a private research university located in Boston, which is the capital and the largest city of the US state of Massachusetts, with a population estimated at a number of more than 620 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which also makes it the 21st largest city in the country. Boston is unofficially called ‘’ Capital of New England’’ due to its strong economic and cultural impact.
BU’s history starts back in 1839, when the Newbury Biblical Institute in Newbury, Vermont was established, which was chartered with the name ‘’Boston University’’, in 1869, by the Massachusetts Legislature. Having today more than 31 000 students and over 4000 faculty members, Boston University is one of the largest private universities in USA, also having one of the largest employee number in Boston.
BU offers its students bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, as well as medical and dental degrees, through 18 colleges and schools, situated on 2 campuses, the main campus being located along the Charles River in Boston’s Fenway-Kenmore and Allston neighborhoods, and the Boston University Medical Campus, which is located in Boston’s South End neighborhood. The university also offers 75 study abroad programs, in more than 33 cities from over 20 countries.
The athletic teams from BU are known as the Boston University Terriers, who compete in NCAA Division I, in the America East, Hockey East, and Colonial Athletic Association conferences, in various sports including cross country, basketball golf, soccer, swimming and tennis, being perhaps best known for their achievements in men’s ice hockey, considered to be the most successful athletic team on campus, having won five NCAA championships - including the 2009 NCAA title, which was a classic last-minute comeback victory, as well as 29 Beanpot titles.
Among BU’s faculty and alumni, there are 6 Nobel Prize winners, including Martin Luther King, Jr., 22 Pulitzer Prize winners, as well as numerous MacArthur and Guggenheim fellows. Other resonant names on the list of notable BU alumni, there are: Charles Wesley Emerson - founder, Emerson College, J Allard - Vice President, Microsoft, David I. Walsh - former U.S. Senator, former Governor of Massachusetts, Armand Arabian - retired Justice, California Supreme Court, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable in various fields, after attending Boston University.
